Why Working From Home is Overrated

Remote work doesn’t work for everyone and heading down to your local “Habitat” might be the best solution for you.

In 2020, in-person interaction was replaced with Zoom meetings, Skype calls or Microsoft Teams catch-ups. However, come 2021, many businesses have come to the realisation that an agile work environment is only conducive for particular roles within the business or certain types of individuals.

Work From Home Alternative

There are many factors that create a conducive workspace and promote productivity. While this can be replicated to an extent at home, many homes do not have the space for a designed  office space - yes millennials, we are referring to you set up on the kitchen bench. The trend over many years towards living in apartments and townhouses means that for a very large part of the workforce, there is simply no available space suitable as a workspace. Not to mention those attempting to work from home during school holidays with family members being the number one distraction. Whilst distraction is one factor that can be minimised by closing the door to the outside world, unfortunately, the capacity of household internet is incomparable to the high speed networks of modern workplaces.

Do you need a separate office area to make confidential phone calls? Then you may have to consider an alternative to WFH.

The Mental Effects

We all know how hard it is to get into “the flow state” when sitting down at your computer. The reality is, it is even harder switching on to work when sitting with your laptop at the kitchen table. Surrounded by distractions, whether it be dirty dishes in the sink, a load of washing or a DIY project in the backyard, individuals WFH are falling into a productivity pitfall.

Meeting fatigue is a real thing whether you are in-person or online; however,
studies suggest that meeting fatigue is increased when there is a lack of non-verbal cues that help you read the room or know whose turn it is to talk.
